Quick answer

Cancel Duolingo through the place that took the payment.

If you paid on Duolingo's website, sign in there and review the subscription settings. If Apple billed you, use Settings, your name, Subscriptions and Duolingo. If Google Play billed you, use Google Play subscriptions. Do not rely on deleting the app. Wait until the billing service confirms that renewal is off and shows an end date.

A language-learning plan can be useful while a course is part of your routine. It can also keep renewing after an exam, holiday or learning habit has changed. Cancelling is not a judgement on the app. It is simply a chance to decide whether the next payment is one you would make deliberately.

The one detail that makes this job easier is the billing route. Super Duolingo can be bought through the website, the App Store or Google Play. The service that sold it owns the renewal controls. Start there and you avoid the frustrating loop of looking for a button in the wrong account.

1. Find who billed you

Look for the latest receipt before changing anything. Search your email for Duolingo, Apple or Google Play, then compare the amount and date with your bank statement. If the receipt says Apple, Apple manages it. If it says Google Play, Google manages it. If it comes directly from Duolingo, start in your Duolingo account on the web.

This matters when you use more than one device. An iPhone can show the Duolingo app even when the plan was bought in a browser, and an Android tablet can be signed in with a different Google account from the one used for payment. A missing entry is a clue to check another billing route, not proof that the subscription has ended.

Take a moment to note the renewal date while you are there. A plan may remain active until the end of the period already paid for, so seeing paid features today is not proof that cancellation failed.

2. Cancel a Duolingo subscription bought through Apple

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad used for the purchase.
  2. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select Duolingo from the active subscriptions list.
  4. Choose Cancel Subscription and complete the confirmation.
  5. Save the expiry date or confirmation email.

Apple's current subscription guidance explains that an expiry message or a missing cancel button can mean the subscription is already set to end. If you cannot see Duolingo, search your inbox for an Apple receipt and sign in with the Apple Account named there. A family member's purchase must be managed by the account that made it.

Removing the app from the device does not cancel an App Store purchase. Treat the confirmation in Apple Subscriptions as the useful evidence, then leave the app installed or remove it separately, depending on what you want.

3. Cancel a Duolingo subscription through Google Play

  1. Open Google Play on the Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the profile icon, then choose Payments and subscriptions.
  3. Open Subscriptions and select Duolingo.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
  5. Check the end date and keep the confirmation.

Google says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Its subscription help page also notes that access normally continues for the period already paid for. If Duolingo is not listed, switch Google accounts in Play before assuming the plan is gone.

4. Cancel a subscription bought on Duolingo's website

Sign in to Duolingo in a web browser using the account that received the billing emails. Open the subscription or Super Duolingo area in account settings and follow the cancellation option shown there. The labels can change, so use the current account screen rather than copying an old tutorial step by step.

Duolingo's terms say that a paid periodic subscription continues until the end of the current billing period after cancellation. They also explain that App Store and Google Play payments are handled by those stores, which is why a web account cannot cancel an Apple or Google purchase for you. If you cannot find the web control, use Duolingo's Help Centre with the email address and billing details tied to the account.

5. Check the end date, not just the button

Once you have cancelled, record three things: where the plan was billed, the day you cancelled and the displayed end date. A screenshot or the confirmation email is enough. Keep it until the next expected renewal date has passed, then clear the reminder if no new charge appears.

Seeing Super features after you cancel is often normal. It generally means you are still inside the period already paid for. The reliable check is the renewal status in the billing account, followed by the absence of a fresh charge after the saved date.

If you cannot find Duolingo in the subscriptions list

Do not start a new plan just to test whether the old one is active. That can turn one unclear payment into two. Instead, work backwards from the most recent charge. Search the inbox that receives receipts, check the merchant wording on the bank statement and compare the date with the three possible billing routes.

For Apple purchases, the receipt identifies the Apple Account that owns the subscription. For Google Play, switch accounts from the profile menu and check Subscriptions again. For a direct purchase, try any email address that may have been used to log in to Duolingo, especially an older address or one used on a computer rather than a phone. The account that sends the receipt is usually the one that can show the plan.

If you still cannot locate it, gather the small amount of information support will need: the email address used, the date and amount of the payment, and the last four digits of the card only if a support form asks for them. Avoid sending screenshots that show a full card number. A short, specific support request is safer and normally easier to resolve than a long explanation.

What cancellation does and does not change

Cancelling turns off the next renewal. It does not normally erase the language progress already tied to the account, and it does not automatically delete the app from your phone. Those are separate choices. Keep the app if you want to use the free version, or remove it if it is simply taking up space. The important financial step is confirming that the billing platform shows no future renewal.

It is also worth checking whether the plan is individual or shared before you cancel. If other people use a family plan, tell them the end date so nobody is surprised. If your own plan is changing because you now need fewer paid features, read the choices in the current billing screen first. A downgrade can be more useful than a rushed cancellation when you expect to return to regular learning soon.

6. Free trials, refunds and changing plans

If you are on a trial, cancel before its stated end date instead of waiting for the last minute. Duolingo's Super page says users can cancel any time and shows a reminder before its standard seven-day trial ends, while Apple recommends allowing at least 24 hours before a trial ends. Read the date shown in your own account, because promotions and billing routes can differ.

A cancellation stops a future renewal. It does not automatically reverse an earlier payment. Duolingo's refund guidance says App Store refunds are handled by Apple, while people who bought on the web or Android should use the appropriate Duolingo support route. Keep the request factual: include account email, purchase date and amount, but never full card details.

If you still want the app but not the current plan, first check whether a lower-cost or family option is available in the billing account. Do not start another plan through a different store until you know what happens to the existing one. Two subscriptions linked to different accounts are much harder to spot later.

Make the next subscription decision clear

A subscription review is not about cancelling everything. It is about knowing what each repeat payment is doing for you. Before the next renewal, ask one plain question: would I choose this again at its current price today? If yes, keep it without guilt. If not, use the billing route, save the end date and move on.

For a wider check of recurring costs, 118M8's subscription tracker app helps make repeat payments visible in one place. You can also use our guides for cancelling Spotify and cancelling Netflix when a few subscriptions need the same calm review.

A three-step cancellation check

  1. 1. Find the biller. Use the latest receipt, not the device in front of you.
  2. 2. Stop renewal there. Complete every confirmation screen.
  3. 3. Save the end date. Check it once after the next expected payment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a Duolingo subscription?
Cancel with the company that billed you: Duolingo for a web purchase, Apple for an App Store purchase or Google Play for an Android purchase.

Does deleting Duolingo cancel Super Duolingo?
No. Removing the app or deleting an account does not normally stop a recurring payment. Use the correct billing platform and keep its confirmation.

Will I keep Super Duolingo after I cancel?
Duolingo says a cancelled paid plan normally remains available until the end of the current billing period. Check the end date shown by your billing account.

Can I get a refund for Duolingo?
Refunds are separate from cancellation. Apple handles App Store refunds; for web or Android purchases, follow Duolingo's current support guidance.

Cancellation, end-date and refund details were checked against Duolingo's terms, its refund guidance, Apple's subscription guidance and Google Play's subscription guidance.
